Being a full-time blogger is a unique career that not many people know much about. I’m constantly being asked what I do all day, and what the career path involves. Over the years I have developed a routine that allows me to make the most out of my career, and fit my lifestyle.
I’m going to breakdown what a “day in the life” is like, but first I’m going to share my greatest piece of advice for freelancers and those who work from home; make time for yourself. Being your own boss can be overwhelming, and you sometimes forget to separate work from pleasure. Create moments throughout the day that allow you to indulge, and unwind. Personally, a tasty little treat always does it for me. The new LÄRABAR minis have been my go-to lately. Not only are they delicious, but they’re the perfect size, and give me so much energy throughout the day. And they only have three ingredients!! Yes, three. Sometimes when I get wrapped up in work, I’ll reach for something unhealthy, so having a package of the LÄRABAR minis on my desk has been a complete lifesaver. You’d be surprise what stepping out of the office for a break with a tasty treat can do for your mood.
8:30 – 9:00 am | I always start the day by checking e-mails on my phone. I won’t typically respond to e-mails until I’m at my desk, but quickly reviewing new e-mails helps me get an idea of how my day will go. I’ll also go through all of my social media pages, mostly Instagram, and see if I received any new comments or messages during the night.
9:30 – 10:30 am | Before responding to e-mails, I like to grab a cup of tea, and read through my planner. It’s a good way to remind myself of what needs to be completed for the day. If I don’t write it down, I won’t remember, so I try to be as thorough as possible in my planner.
10:30 – 11:30 am | Now, it’s time to run some errands. I like to spend time with my dad in the morning, so he usually picks me and Merlin (my puppy) up somewhere around 10 and we run errands together. Typical errands include going to the bank, picking up flowers or props, dropping off packages at the post office, and buying office supplies. Aside from blogging, I also run and operate my own online boutique, so I’m constantly at my local office supply store and the post office. Even though running errands can seem boring, I treasure the time out of the house and with my dad. It’s one of those moments throughout the day that make me extra happy.
12:00 pm | Now it’s time to get back to work. Depending on what I have scheduled for the day, I’m either taking photos or writing content during this time. I like to take photos early in the afternoon for the best lighting.
2:00 pm | After taking photos or writing, I take a quick 15 minute break, and have a snack like the LÄRABAR minis. I especially love the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavor. So yummy!
2:15 – 3:15pm | I post on social media throughout the day, but I like to spend an hour or two everyday truly focusing on my online content. I take the time to respond to comments, pin pretty images, and catch-up on Twitter. Engaging with your audience is crucial as a blogger, so I make sure to dedicate time to do so frequently.
3:15 – 4:15pm | I take care of any administrative work. When you work for yourself, it’s SO important to keep track of expenses, and stay on top of accounting responsibilities. I like to organize my finances at least once a week, as well as look over contracts, and research future collaborations during this time. A lot goes on behind the scenes when you’re a blogger.
4:15 – 6:00pm | I fill the rest of the day with more writing, researching, and planning. Blogging is constantly evolving, and it’s important to stay ahead of the trends, so I’m always doing my homework and learning new things. My days are constantly changing based on the projects that I’m working on, but I like to keep my schedule as planned and consistent as possible. Blogging is a creative career path, so I do try to be spontaneous, but it’s also my own personal business, so I take it seriously, and plan ahead.
I hope breaking down my blogging schedule was helpful for other freelancers and entrepreneurs out there. Don’t forget my biggest piece of advice; take mini moments for yourself.
