There’s something about summer that really pushes me to make healthier choices. In the past, I was intimidated by the idea of making better choices when it came to food and exercise. “Getting fit” seemed impossible. The truth is, it really isn’t that complicated. There are small steps you can take each day towards getting in shape and living a healthier lifestyle. Here are the five easy ways I plan to stay fit this summer:
1. Choose healthier drink options.
In the past, I’ve always been the person who drank sugary drinks way too often, and never consumed enough water. I complained that I needed carbonation and didn’t like the flavorlessness of regular water. Enter Schweppes Sparkling Water; the perfect, healthier option. Schweppes Seltzer is delicious, refreshing, and unsweetened. It keeps me hydrated even on 90 degree days in New York, and I never feel guilty about drinking it.
2. Eat more fruit.
Have a sweet tooth? Opt for a fresh piece of watermelon, or a bowl of pineapple. Try to avoid sugary snacks as much as possible, and stick with fruits or vegetables. They’re delicious, good for you, and will fill you with energy for all of your exciting summer plans. And trust me, there is nothing like sitting outside on a warm’s summer night, enjoying a bowl of fresh fruit.
3. Take more walks.
Leave your car in the garage, and try to walk wherever you can. It’s a great way to squeeze exercise into your day without feeling like you overdid it. I’ve noticed quite a difference just by taking my dog Merlin on an extra walk in the evening. It feels great to be outside, and know that I’m racking up some extra steps for the day.
Swimming is such a fun way to get in shape. It’s another exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise, which I love. I’m not the biggest fan of the gym, so I like to get creative when it comes to getting in shape. You’d be surprise what an awesome workout you get from swimming in your pool or at the beach.
5. Plan your meals in advance.
Something that Matt and I have started doing on a weekly basis is meal planning. Before heading to the grocery store we plan breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the entire week. It makes grocery shopping faster, we spend less money, and because we stick to a plan, we’re less likely to eat junk food.
As you can see, just a few changes to your daily routine can make it so much easier to get in shape. You don’t have to spend a ton of money or completely change your life. Making a few smarter, healthier choices can help you get and stay in shape this summer.
Drinking Schweppes Sparkling Water in Pink Grapefruit has been such a healthy and delicious addition to my summer days. I love drinking it with all my meals, and it’s even great to take on the go. Matt and I have started a new tradition of sitting on our porch at night to catch up on our days, and I always bring a can down to enjoy while we do. You can find it in the water or seltzer aisle at your nearest ShopRite or grocery store.
